Day one: Atlanta to Frankfurt

To just pick up from last time...

My “flight-buddy” was a guy from Sweden. I never caught his name, but he was pretty awesome. I had the window seat and he sat down first so we had the awkward ‘bumping-into-everyone-trying-to-stow-bags-and-not-knock-anyone-out’ dance. On top of the people directly behind me being the people that had the seats directly behind us (and not wanting to wait >< ). He and I laughed a whole bunch, especially when the guy in front of me kept moving his seat when I was re positioning my in flight TV thing! He also told me to check out the amusement parks in Europe, but to not expect anything like the US’s

The view from my window, while we were leaving the US. For the first few hours I thought it'd be brilliant to get a photo of my last glimpse of  the States, then I remembered that the pictures would be hard to see.
I guess it’s really obvious that I’m an American traveling around. Perhaps it’s my “oh God what have I got myself into” expression, but several times people who had been speaking German with others swapped to English with me. I was pretty glad at the time, honestly, but now I wish I would have responded auf Deutsch. Oh well, next time, yeah?

My first thoughts when coming into Europe was that there were a whole lot of pine trees. At least they looked like they were pine trees. Seriously, those things are everywhere! I also thought it was really cute that, when I looked down, you’d see lots of clumps of buildings surrounded by what looked to be farmland. I guess when I heard that there are so many people in such a small space, that I assumed that all the land was taken up by houses and factories. (I’m glad that’s not the case, btw!)

Other things that I noticed was that the rivers looked different than I’d expected. I made a note of several of the major rivers that we passed in the US and thought it looked kind of funny. They all are pretty spike-y with lakes throughout, whereas here it looks like a giant just took his finger and drug it through Europe. It’s symmetrical looking, even when it bends. I guess I’ll have to take a picture to show you what I mean.

In all honesty, my journey isn't over. At the time of writing this I’m in the Frankfort airport with a now 4 hour layover. (Our flight got in early). We were allowed 30 minutes of free wifi so I jumped on that pretty quickly.  The first thing I bought when I got over here was a coke and some risen. Very…adventurous, haha. A big part was I wanted to compare what I know these things to look like with how they look over here. I can say I was kind of disappointed that I didn't get a mycokerewards code under my cap, haha. I don’t need to be lugging down my suitcase with those, anyway.

My first purchases, as I'm writing this

I can’t find the USO, though, which is kind of frustrating. Most people don’t seem to know what it is, and I don’t know what it stands for. Even the information kiosks seem to be at a loss. Oh well, I’ll look like a super hipster kid and type on my laptop in this terminal café place. Haha

‘til next time!
